Rampant and often random abuse of strong antibiotics has become an epidemic today. It is precisely to be blamed for the spate of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria plaguing mankind today. In a recent safety statement released by the FDA, the federal agency has ratcheted up its warning about the disabling risks/side effects associated with a class of commonly-prescribed antibiotic.

The FDA Safety Communication

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is advising that the serious side effects associated with fluoroquinolone antibacterial drugs generally outweigh the benefits for patients with sinusitis, bronchitis, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections who have other treatment options,” the FDA said in a Drug Safety Communication. “For patients with these conditions, fluoroquinolones should be reserved for those who do not have alternative treatment options.”

FDA Report about Fluoroquinolone Prescription & Usage

These drugs have been sold over the counter for over two decades now and are usually categorized under generic medicine. As per an FDA report, nearly 23 million patients were prescribed these types of drugs in 4 years between 2010 and 2014 alone. Most of these prescriptions were for people suffering from the common sinusitis, bronchitis, and urinary tract infections.

Common Fluoroquinolone antibiotic medications available in the market include:

  • Avelox (moxifloxacin)
  • Factive (ofloxacin)
  • Cipro (ciprofloxacin)
  • Levaquin (levofloxacin)
  • Floxin (gemifloxacin)
  • Noroxin (norfloxacin)

Potential Side Effects & Health Risks

FDA expressed concern about the serious and often debilitating side effects that these powerful fluoroquinolone anti-bacterial drugs pose. These may include pain in the joint, muscle and tendon, tingling sensation in the muscles and tendons and even hallucination and a state of confusion. These drugs also pose a high risk of tendon rupture in patients over the age of 60 years. It can also cause pain in the stomach, weakness and abnormal sensations.

While FDA had issued warnings about the use of this category of drugs in 2008 and 2013 as well, the latest safety communication came with a strict advise to doctors to not to prescribe this drug if other safer alternatives are available. This comes after FDA’s observation that doctors were prescribing these drugs even for minor infections when they can easily be treated by a less powerful and less risky antibiotic. What is important to note here is “less” risky, but risky nonetheless, as we are still to find an antibiotic that has no side effects at all.

The Best Alternative is Colloidal Silver

No antibiotic available in the market is completely risk free. Thankfully, we have the most effective and safest natural antibiotic to treat such common infections as sinusitis, urinary tract infections and bronchitis – SilverIon Colloidal Silver. Use of colloidal silver for treating such minor infections and other common ailment can effectively put an end to the growing epidemic of antibiotic-resistant infections and provide long term relief from common infections.
